Guest Blog - Chief Social Work Adviser for the Scottish Government

Guest blog from Iona Colvin, Chief Social Work Adviser for the Scottish Government.

It is my absolute pleasure to bring you the Scottish Social Services Awards 2022. At a time of unprecedented change in our sector whilst we recover from the global COVID-19 pandemic and begin to understand the consequences of the ongoing war in Ukraine, it continues to be of the utmost importance to recognise our social services sector for your invaluable contribution to Scotland’s society. I hope that the Scottish Social Services Awards this year offers you all an opportunity to reflect on the past year and be immensely proud of the work you have achieved.

The Awards will celebrate the individuals, teams and organisations; recognising the invaluable contribution made by those working across the social services sector that make a real and positive difference in people’s lives including local authorities, universities and third sector organisations.

We want to continue to encourage creative, fresh, diverse and innovative approaches that go above and beyond national standards, to make a difference for the people and communities they serve.

You will see that we have extended our Awards this year to cover 14 different categories, including both individual awards and team/organisational awards. Along with some familiar categories such as our “Bright Spark” Award, we introduce a number of fresh categories including our “Rural Ways of Working”,Excellence In…” and, one that I am particularly excited for, our “Outstanding Contribution to Social Services” Award. We also continue to work in partnership with Social Work Scotland and the Scottish Association for Social Workers on our “Leadership Award” and “Social Worker of the Year” Award, respectively. We hope that this reflects the breadth and depth of work across our sector, and can’t wait to celebrate these with you.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to you all. These past years have been some of the most challenging in recent times, however we witnessed our social service workers across the country stand up and continue protect our most vulnerable citizens whilst much of the country came to a halt. This was no small ask, and it is largely because each one of you that Scotland’s cared for individuals continued to thrive.

This year’s ceremony will take place on the evening of 15th September at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow, welcoming a mixture of key partners, organisations and all who make the shortlist.

Applications are now open, and will remain so until 6pm on Monday, 27th June. I encourage everyone to take the time to reflect on the work of yourself and your colleagues over the last year and nominate anyone who you feel should be awarded for the incredible work that is done across the sector for the people of Scotland.
